Outreach and Community Service of Westminster Presbyterian Church (USA)
Westminster Members are involved in a number of outreach programs:
We have assisted the Montgomery Hispanic Seventh Day Adventists Congregation, which worships at our location on Saturdays, in their distribution of food to impoverished families. This food, which is provided by the Montgomery Area Food Bank, is distributed in the church parking lot and has put literally tons of food on the tables of hundreds of needy families.
We provide assistance in various ways at One Church Mission Center, which provides many of the amenities of home to the homeless and needy in Montgomery. This is a part of the mission work of the Reality & Truth Ministries. We facilitated the donation of new men’s Columbia coats, socks, and shoes for distribution there.
We have provided monetary gifts, sandwiches, and fresh vegetables to the Friendship Mission for Men on the Mobile Highway for several years.
This year we have visited and provided funds to the new Friendship Mission North Shelter for Women and Children. Westminster Presbyterian Women, when given the opportunity to request $500 for a mission project from an inheritance left to the PW Presbytery Board, selected the women’s shelter, and our request was approved. The Westminster Presbyterian Women hosted a St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon in March and raised several hundred dollars in donations which were also given to the women’s shelter.
We provide meals for the Family Promise families that Whitfield United Methodist Church hosts.
We collect food monthly for the Good Sam Ministries.
We support and provide camp scholarship funds for children at the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega, Alabama.
We provide gifts for women and children at the Sunshine Center, which offers shelter to victims of domestic abuse.
We participate each year in Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Ministry by providing Christmas gifts for children in impoverished countries.
Every May, the Presbyterian Women have a Birthday Offering Luncheon. The money raised is used, in part, to host the John Knox Birthday Party on the first Monday in June. Small gifts are given to the residents with June birthdays.
Presbyterian Women give to the PW Thank Offering and the Least Coin. Monetary gifts are given each year to Mission Haven, and Living Waters for the World.
Westminster Women of the Church have supported the Camden Youth Development Center, which provides after-school activities and tutoring during the school year and a full day program during summer months, by supplying monetary gifts and art supplies.
For several years we have prepared hygiene kits for Church World Service distribution.
We have provided “Buckets” of supplies for areas affected by natural disasters.
We are exceptionally proud of and blessed by our Westminster /Community Children’s Choir. This choir for kindergarten-6th grade children is comprised of children from all over the tri-county area and is open to all. It was created and is led by our Music Director, Beth Nicholson. The Children give of themselves in so many ways. They inspire and share God’s love with others in worship and beyond not only with their voices but in the creative cards they make and send to cheer the sick and hurting.
